Crystal River FL. area campgrounds.

Recommendations on campgrounds in this area and possibly sites to see/things to do.

We’ve stayed at Camp N Water a few times and enjoyed it, though it’s in Homosassa and it caters to those who like fishing/boating. So much of this area depends on the time of the year and what type of activities you prefer. This time of the year, it’s crowded with snowbirds. In the summer, it’s crowded with rednecks (my people LOL). So pick your poison.

You mean Crackers don't you? :)
We were at the Florida State Fair yesterday and they have a giant area in the park called Cracker Corner. Loved it and watched a blue grass band named Born Lonesome play for almost an hour. They were a really tight group and should make the big time.
  • A little over an hour north of Crystal River is Hart Springs and Otter Springs Campgrounds. Both are quite nice campgrounds. A bit out of your way,, but nice springs to visit.

  • Manatees are packed in the springs now. Water is warmer. Three Sisters Park in Crystal River is best viewing area. April, May they will start to leave for the Gulf. Inverness has a historic courthouse. Elvis starred in a movie filmed there. Citrus County has terrific bike and hiking trails. Kayaking in the various fresh water springs in the area is a fun activity. Several of the rivers have boat tours. On Hwy 19 north of Crystal River is the western start of the Florida Barge Canal which was to be a cross state project. Halted by President Nixon. Great trail along the canal. Enjoy the Nature Coast!

X2 - although we have not stayed there since it became a Sun Resort
It may have changed. We found the sites to be large and nicely landscaped. Don"t let the name put you off.
  • We stay at Rock Cruher Canyon when we visit family in Inverness. It's a Sun Resorts property and has nice amenities and the sites are well spaced. We like it.
