D.C. by motorhome

I'm looking for advice on doing DC by motorhome. Looking for places to park and ideas for navigating the city. We are planning on being in the city on Monday July 6. Will need a place to stay the evening of July 6. We aren't towing a vehicle. Thanks in advance for the advice.
  • Personally...I would choose a place like Cherry Hill.. While some may think it's a little pricey, it's a safe place to leave your RV. Plus the fact that you will have a cool comfortable place to return to after seeing the sites in DC, since you will have it plugged in and AC on. Given the fact that you will also have cable tv at night (if you like that sort of thing) and a plce to dump your tanks.

I would highly recommend taking public transportation into the city. Even if you park in the city, you will still be doing a heck of a lot of walking. Wear comfortable shoes!
  • Friends stayed at a campground. Than they took the metro to places they wanted to go.
And I do not know if the Metro should have a capitol letter. To me it was the subway.
Easy to navigate, even for hick like me.
  • I live here and had a 34 footer and would not take it in. There is no really easy parking for that especially if they have heighten terror concerns
They stopped my pickup and searched it on the way to Union Station
  • Another Cherry Hill vote. Did that last year and worked well. It is out of town a bit but the park itself was a great place to stay.
  • There is Cherry Hill as other posters have stated. We use Bull Run Regional Park near Manassas, VA. But without a toad I wouldn't recommend it. Parking will be your biggest obstacle. If using Cherry Hill there are tour busses of all kinds. Or my preference would be a city bus to the nearest Metro Station and use it to get around the city. The Metro is very user friendly.
  • We went by class A the first time. We parked in Union station which is a hefty hike by foot or a long ride on local transit to the national mall on the first day. Second day we parked at Arlington cemetery (across the Potomac From the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials). Both locations charged us about 25.00 for the time we were parked.
We never stayed at Cherry Hill CG, I understand they have improved their park and have a local bus transit stop outside their CG.
The one thing we remembered was how long it took to get anywhere on the local public transit. Better off parking and walking or catching public transit from the cemetery, just remember the parking lot at Arlington close's at night; with gates
We stayed in a CG once in Fredricksburg VA. and drove to the parking area.
The second time we visited we took a toad.
  • How big is your motorhome? And do you plan to actually drive it in The District?

There is parking at Union Station: http://www.unionstationdc.com/parking

    Campground Options:
Cherry Hill (almost everyone stays here).
Bull Run Regional Park, Centerville VA (not as convenient)
Greenbelt Park (if you don't need electric).

You might want to consider having a reservation as DC is even more crowded than usual around the 4th of July weekend.
