Death Valley suggestions early January

Nope, no reservations made. 40ft motorhome. Thinking of stopping for a few days on the way south.
Hows the Furnace Creek RV resort?

Any other suggestions?

In college, around 1981, camping in Furnace creek with a geology class; began snowing. Had about 1" on the ground for a few hours.
  • First choice - Mesquite. Near the crater, Scotty's castle, and if you are up to it - the Race Track. Second choice - Furnace Creek.

  • I second the Scotty's tour but go early. I'd call about reservations as the place always looks full to me.
  • I stayed at Furnace Creek campground. Some hookup, some non hookup sites. Some very large sites. Verizon service. Then on to Mesquite Spring. My favorite of the two no hookups. More remote, near crater and Scotty's Castle. Friend w/ 35' had no problem but he did rub side of motorhome on mesquite bushes at entrance. Variable size sites, some more level than others. Some sites very long. No Verizon or ATT service at Mesquite Spring.

Then on to Lakeside RV park in Pahrump. $16 w/ Passport America. First impression is attractive campground for the price. I do not recommend the buffet (limited selection mediocre at best).
  • With our 40' we've always stayed at either Mesquite Springs - a beauty, and close to Scotty's Castle - a must-do tour. We've also stayed at Stovepipe Wells and Furnace Creek's boondocking spot. All are dry camping. Never stayed at the 'resort'.
  • Also on your way south, I would suggest you stop over in Pahrump, Nevada. They have two great RV campgrounds with full amenities. I believe it is no more than an hour or so south.
  • We really liked Mesquite Springs Campground, up by Scotty's Castle -- great views of the mountains all around -- and yes, that is snow -- this was taken in December a few years ago:

Bring warm clothes. Do you have a toad? If so, the slot canyons nearby are a lot of fun.
