Destination Suggestions Please

We are looking to take a short (10 days or less) vacation in mid May. I prefer somewhere in the mountains of New Mexico or lower Colorado but am open to other suggestions as long as they are not too far away due to our limited time. We will be traveling from the Central Texas area (near Waco, TX). We plan to spend about 5-7 days at the destination we choose. We have previously stayed in Red River, NM (love the town of Red River but wasn't overly thrilled with the RV parks there), Chama NM, Pagosa Springs CO, and Vallicito (Bayfield) CO. We wouldn't mind going back to any of these places but wondering what else is out there? I am a big scenery buff so looking for a beautiful area for site seeing. I have also considered the Ozark Mountains as an alternative. We are looking for full hookups with spacious sites. I don't like parking lot type sites. We've stayed in both treed sites adjacent to the Forrest and mountain view sites and love both so that doesn't matter. This trip is strictly to unwind/relax so we aren't really concerned about things to do. We will be as we call in Texas...vegging out! lol

Can some of you good people please offer suggestions?

  • Never stayed there but it's on our list: Ridgway State Park in Ridgway CO. Gets good reviews on www.rvparkreviews.com Beautiful scenery and between Ouray and Montrose. There are 3 campgrounds at Ridgway Pa-Co-Chu-Puk Campground has full hookups.
  • Check out Ruidoso NM.Lots of places to stay, lots of things to do on relatively short day trips.
  • Thanks everyone for the suggestions thus far. I am enjoying looking into each of them.

We've been mid May before. The cool days and cold nights don't bother us much. In fact, we like it. We usually go in September also but this year we won't be able to make that trip due to a new grandbaby making his/her arrival around that time.

I have been googling for days. LOL
I finally decided asking may be the fastest way to find the best spots :)
  • We love eastern AZ around the Luna Lake, Alpine areas. Very scenic high altitude mountains. Lots of great trout streams and lakes all around. If you have a toad there are endless sites to see along the numerous logging roads. These roads are well graded and widely used by all vehicles. Big Lake at 9,000ft is beautiful!

Nearby is Greer, AZ. Several lakes and the little Colorado river are there.
  • If you know where Telluride, CO is.... that would give you some idea of where this is...
Cayton Campground is 6 miles northeast of Rico on Colorado Highway 145 (part of the San Juan Skyway) 43 miles from Dolores. The entrance is 1/2 mile east of the highway on the Barlow Creek Road (Forest Rd. 578).

27 sites,,,,11 are walk-ins. Some are electric and some not. central dump station,,,water around the park, but not at the sites.
The campground has 27 campsites, many along the river. Eighteen sites offer 50 amp RV electric plug ins. There are 16 reservable sites, 11 with electricity, and 11 non-reservable sites, 5 with electricity. Fishing is popular on summer weekends. At 9,400 feet, expect cool evenings. A dry dump station is in place.
The Barlow Creek Road continues past the campground and crosses Bolam Pass with spectacular views. Road conditions near the pass limit travel to 4WD vehicles. The route eventually connects with the Hermosa Park Road behind Durango Mountain Resort and leads to U.S. Highway 550. The Colorado Trail follows the ridge across Bolam Pass.
  • Stay at Santa Fe Skies RV - lots of scenery around it; good restaurants; museums; drive up to the ski area.

Cochiti Corp of Engineers campground has some full-hookups, I believe. Hwy 84 in New Mexico is beautiful.

About a mile away from Cochiti is Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks Nat'l Monument - very unique:

    Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks Nat'l Monument

Off the highway is Bandelier Nat'l Monument for Indian ruins - very nice and the Los Alamos facility is interesting to explore. Continue north on 84 and you'll come to Abiquiu Corp of Engineers park - there are some full hookups. It's the painter, Georgia O'Keefe's hangout in nice country.

Move around two or three places and explore.
