If you have already done the norther route, when not go south out of Detroit, pick up I-40 across to Little Rock and across, maybe a side 2-3 days to Sante Fe, a couple of days in Albuquerque, the divert at Winslow (see if the girl with the flat-bed Ford is around) and head for Mesa, AZ then south to Tucson.

I suggested it because we been along Hwy 50 a few times in October and the weather was gorgeous.

One thing - you can't count on the weather. Yellowstone is bitter cold right now and the area has had snow - in July. :)

Why not stay IN the parks themselves for the best experience and less driving? Go to the park web site for camping information.

We've also done Page / Antelope Canyon....probably second only to the Grand Canyon in terms of bucket list, must see's! A friend accused me of plagiarizing a magazine's photos after looking at pictures I took in Antelope Canyon! Simply amazing!

Can anyone recommend campgrounds in Southern Utah? Close enough to the parks for day trips?

Since you are in the area I would highly recommend Antelope Canyon (Page) in N. Arizona. We did Bryce and Zion in early November last year, cold some snow but you should be fine in October. The lower Antelope canyon is unique.

Leaving sometime around the first week of October.....too late to avoid the mountain snow?

We've been to Arches a few years ago, but would appreciate any insight into Glen Canyon and area.....Recommended campgrounds, best areas to explore....etc!

When you say Southern Utah, I think of National Parks - Capital Reef, Zion, Bryce, Arches & Canyonland. Excellent hiking throughout the region.

oh...and when are you leaving...could make a difference in routes.
