driving down i95

How many of you will be leaving thursday or friday after christmas and going down i95 to florida. I will be leaving thursday night and was wondering how busy it will be.
Happy holidays to all and safe travels
  • Keep in mind on 1/1, the Carolina Gamecocks (Columbis, SC) will be playing in a Bowl Game in Orlando, they are expecting a sell out. That will make 95 very busy from the 26/95 split.

Leave early, stay long & spend lots of money, at least in Daytona Beach we love our snow birds

    Merry Christmas
  • I have left Dec 26 a few times and the one year it was pull up and stop seemed all way across North Carolina and ever year is was two lanes of a moving parking lot as far as could see so NEVER AGAIN
  • Every time I have to use that parking lot I question why anyone living in that area would put up with that. Why would they not demand of their leaders a fix of the problem ? I have gone thru there at 2AM and it is not much better than at 10AM.
  • I avoided 95 from NY to NC but when I hit it at the VA NC state line it was busy but not really slow. Others here in NC report backups in the Richmond Petersburg area but they had kept off 95 until then. I am in Myrtle Beach tomorrow and not sure if I will trust 95 of take the senic Rt. 17

One thing about higher speeds on Interstates and other roads it increases the carrying capacity, empties the road faster saves fuel.
North Carolina keeps it's road speeds down, and makes no sense. It all started about 35 years ago when the Folks from up north started immigrating to NC to save taxes, and more freedom.
  • jw of 4 corners...I live about 30 miles N of MB and drive to Jax fl often. Hyway 31 will get you around MB and 17 construction Approaching and South of Charleston is about done. I always take that route unless I have to go through Charleston in middle of rush hour. Distance about equal I think and way more scenic / fun to drive.
  • Riven: Thanks for the info. I have taken 31 before and yes a lot easier than staying on 17. I think I will take my chances on Sunday and head for 95 and St. Augustine rather than deal with 17. I end up for 3 months in Umatilla which is away from the coast and all the traffic.
  • Only on 95 for 25 miles today and it wasn't bad at all. In Myrtle Beach now at Ocean Lakes. Looking out the living area and Kitchen window at nothing but dune grass and the Ocean. Think we will stay a second night because it is supposed to rain tomorrow and no use driving in the rain when I don't have a schedule:) Maybe spend a night in Savanaha before heading into Fla. Getting good at avoiding 95:)
  • Drove home from the keys on 95 the last two days. Southbound traffic was pretty intense in spots. Stop and go it seemed. Ran into the usual traffic accidents in Jax, FL. I don't know what it is about that place, but there are accidents there every flippin' time I pass thru.
