durango co campgrounds

We are headed to the Durango area. Blue Spruce RV Park at Lake Vallecito is the one of the best parks in the area. Also very well run--owners live there year around. Also great fishing in the lake. Downside--about 25 miles to Durango--not an issue with us.

This is exactly what I was thinking. If you don't mind that it is not in town and may require some driving, it is not far from the lake. We have stayed at United in town on another occasion, but really enjoyed staying out here at Blue Spruce.

We stayed at Riverside a couple of years ago. It is no longer a KOA, but is (or was) a Coast to Coast (they change affiliation from year to year).

Nice CG. The river was running high and the River-Runners were having a ball.

The United is the best. We have stayed at the Alpine Rose and never have been impressed. They are not the friendliest in town. They do however have a great breakfast in the mornings. The United has been our favorite since the early '80s when we lived in Albuquerque. We are now in Washington state, and we still stay there whenever we are down that way.

It has been several years since we camped in Durango but I have to share a story. We got up on a very chilly early June morning after sleeping in a tent and went to a local restaurant for breakfast. I ordered the short stack of hotcakes. The waitress brought out a six inch high stack of pancakes as big as pizzas! I asked her, "this is the short stack?" She replied, "you're in Durango honey".

That brought a loud chuckle form the few people in the restaurant followed by a trucker saying "that little fellah ain't gona eat all them". He was right, I ate 1/2 of 1 pancake. We figured that it was a slow morning and hey decided to use up the batter. It still puts a smile on my face thinking about it. You don't get these memories in a hotel!

In the late 90s we stayed at what was then a second KOA on the north end of Durango; it is now called Durango Riverside RV Resort (or similar name). Check rvparkreviews to see if they describe what you like, but they do offer riverside campsites and have a lot of shade trees.

I will second the Lightner Creek suggestion. We haven't stayed there since the new owners took over. We went to Durango last year (KOA) for the first time in about 10 years. At that time they only had about 3 50 amp campsites. The road in was also under construction and it was a little difficult to get to but doable according to the campground owner. He allowed us to drive through and check things out. Appeared the campground was still the same as before he bought it. If we go back to Durango again I will consider staying there if a 50 amp site is availabble.

We chose United. The people at Alpen Rose were not at all friendly on the phone. Now, in all fairness, that was a long time ago, but if they didn't need my business then they won't be getting in the future, either.

We stayed at Alpen Rose RV Park. Two acre fenced dog park. Loved the campground. Would go back. Friendly service, excellent facilities, nicely spaced sites with plenty of shade trees and far enough back from the main road to keep traffic noise to a minimum. Be sure to ride the Durango & Silverton Train or visit Mesa Verde National Park.
