Fairy Stone SP

Heading to Fairy Stone SP early Sept. And plan to "hunt" for "Fairy Stones". Has anyone ever done this with any success? If so, any tips hints or suggestions? Or worse case scenario how much are they at the local gift shop. Gotta have one to bring home.

Thanks
  • Beautiful quiet park.
You can find Fairystones right behind a little store, there is a streambed that is dry most times and the stones are forced out of the ground there. Most will not look as good as the ones you will see for sale both in the store at their location or at the park. The folks at the park will explain what to look for, we simply took a little 3 prong garden fork to help move some stones.
  • That was one of the very first state parks we visited (about 60 years ago now). My grandchildren now have my fairy stones and they've gone on to collect more. I definitely hope you get your souvenir stone, Garmp1. I think you'll find the park a beautiful place to visit too. That's a nice area with plenty to see. If you can, swing by Natural Bridge and Goshen Pass while you're in VA as well.
  • We have had a "fairy stone" handing in our truck for a long time. We used to stay in cabins at the state park. Lovely place and there were lots of deer.
  • magnus, thanks for the info. It is very helpful, but from Fairy Stone we were thinking of heading to Littcarr Campground, KY, A COE park and working our way home from there. Not sure if the extra mileage would be worth it. Or is it???
Just knowing us, we plan for months on end and after all is said and done the trip is no where as planned. Sites missed and sites added!
The natural bridge we did plan on stopping at is in Ky. But there again that's a definite maybe.
    Appreciate your input.
  • I remember back in the early 70's there were alot of stonedfairies around usually stuffed into one VW Microbus...

Well I'm partial to the Natural Bridge in Va and Goshen Pass too. Both are beautiful and scenic. We spent an entire summer in that area. I've heard that the miles and miles of beautiful apple orchards around Buena Vista have been plowed under by developers. But you can still see the campuses of Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University with their classic architecture and museums in Lexington.

Burke's Garden aka "God's Thumbprint" was interesting but in a high mileage trip, you might not be interested. There's also Luray Caverns but that's several hours north of the area off of I-81.

In general I still find SW VA quieter than other areas in the Appalachians.
  • Another question:
For cell/hotspot service if any, which is better AT&T or Verizon?
DW phone is via Verizon & mine is AT&T. And we also use a hot spot and carry one of each, but only want to activate one of them.

    thanks
