Family spring break to Louisiana

We've decided to head south for spring break with the kids. They'll be 14, 12, and 8 when we head out in April. My middle son has asked to "do something different." We've never been to Louisiana, the Mississippi river, a bayou, so that's where we're headed.

I have my heart set on New Orleans area. No matter where we go, we don't aim to drink/party, so it's not a loss to miss out on Bourbon street at night. It seems like there are lots of family activities from a google search.

Any suggestions for my itinerary?

Day 1: Drive from Michigan to Alabama. Long drive, but it has to be done to fit a vacation in 9 days. We'll be ok with it.

Day 2: Visit US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville in morning while en route. Is this stop worthwhile? Any suggestions for a campground that's closest to this location?
Drive to Buccaneer state park in MS. I got the last site at the park. While I don't want to make this a beach vacation (that's what we do all summer), a day on the ocean sounds good. Plus, we've never been to Mississippi or the Gulf of Mexico.

Day 3: Buccaneer SP area, swimming in Gulf. Any good suggestions for families in this area? We'll be tired from the drive so a lazy beach day just might be a perfect break.

Day 4: Leave Buccaneer SP at check out at 2pm. Drive to Louisiana. Most likely Bayou Segnette SP. Any other good suggestions for something very close to New Orleans, but not on the main road like a KOA? We don't need solitude, but I prefer not to be in the noisy crowded city.

Day 4-7: Tour New Orleans area. We're interested in the aquarium, Mississippi steam boats, plantation tours, bayou canoe trips/air boat tours.
Any other suggestions for families that you've enjoyed?

Day 8-9: Drive home. I'm overly ambitious and looking for a quick sightseeing stop on our drive home, hopefully on a different route than our drive down. I've considered stopping at the St Louis Arch. Is this something that can be done in a quick visit or does it take a long time? We'd only have about an hour or two at most. I'm sure the kids would enjoy riding the tram to the top.

Thanks for any suggestions!
  • Don't leave New Orleans without going to Cafe DuMonde and eat some Biegnets for breakfast.
  • DAY 2....The Huntsville Space Center is a must. Your entire family will enjoy it. I am familiar with only one RV park in that area. Northgate RV Park is at exit 354 off I65. It is about 30 minutes drive to the Space Center. We have stayed at this campground. It is small and very flat. All are pull-thru sites with full hookups. Happy camping................
