Appreciate the responses.
I am surprised at many of the responses.
Out of sight would seem to be difficult at many popular boondocking sites.
Would 100 yds be too close? Seems that at that distance all sounds but a generator would not be heard.

Seriously, common sense applies here. If there are a lot of campers (I'm including tent campers as well), split the distance as well as you can. If you need to get closer for some reason, introduce yourselves and ask if any special accommodations are needed, like someone with a respiratory problem may not like campfires. If you need a campfire, search elsewhere.
I've actually only had one negative encounter and it was with people who "explained" to us the we were in the site that they used every Christmas for a gathering of their relatives. They even decorated the trees. We were there in the summer, but we almost surrendered the site to them until they said that they only live 20 miles away. We'd driven 200 miles! ;) Common sense, common courtesy, but stand your ground.
Edit to add: The site in my sig picture is the one I mentioned above. :B And the dog played a rather large role in convincing them to move elsewhere. ;)
