Finding places to stay

Have not done any traveling since 2008, will be going on a long trip from SW Fl to the NW, via Yellowstone starting in May. No particular route in mind other than Mt Rushmore.

Is there a good or better source for finding places to stay as we travel? Wal Mart and rest areas are ok here and there, but have small tanks (Toyota RV) so will need facility's at least every 3 days.

  • I've found the Trailer Life/Woodalls (now combined into Good Sam) directories useful when traveling. They are also available on-line through smart phone/tablet apps, as are other directories like RVParky and AllStays. My wife liked to stay at KOAs so we also carried their directory.

Online directories might be more up to date, and some might be more extensive by having lower standards for listing but I've found the printed versions adequate and they are useful where I don't have high speed data service.
  • We carry the Trailer Life Campground Directory also the KOA directory and we have a smart phone and GPS all of which can help find either a place to stay or restaurants or other services.
  • I have used a combination of Allstays app, CampWhere app, and freecampsites.net to find places to camp in forest CGs, state parks, and known boondocking spots. If you prefer private CGs and RV parks, the other resources already mentioned are better.
  • I zoom in on the area on Google maps then search RV Park and or campgrounds then look them up and reviews.
  • RV Park Reviews can be a big help. If you know where you're going to be, you can use the search function to find campgrounds within various distances of a particular city. You can also use the map function to see what parks are available along various routes. Each state page also lists highly-rated campgrounds & campgrounds with the most ratings - reasons to possibly make those places a destination if they meet your needs & schedule.
  • RVPARKY app. shows your location and all parks that are near you, walmarts, pilot/flying and other gas stations, casinos and some other info. Good app and we use it alot on the road. We rarely make a reservation. It gives the phone number along with park amenities. Try it.
  • rvparkreview

Is the one that most of us use.

The GoodSams book is the other way:

    Amazon

There are some other websites and apps out there but none had the broad coverage that the two above have. In my experience anyway.
