It takes time, but if you simply do a Google search with the name of the closest city or town on your route, you'll get "hits" for the various campgrounds in the area. Then you simply have to check them out on the internet.
We just went through this looking for a reliable campground near AVA, Missouri that wasn't "all male, over 21, and clothing optional". But we found one.
Search on: for example: "Kansas City, Missouri, campground"... and you'll get "hits". Then search them out. Guides are nice, and I really like using the KOA and the Good Sam campground finder for theirs. But, they are not everywhere. Google IS everywhere, and if nothing else, it will return Yellow Pages results also if they don't have a web site.
Good luck! Watch out for those "clothing free" sites. I'm sure you don't want any surprises when you check in! (heee, heee!)
