FISHING IN MINNESOTA

Looking for a place in the lakes area of Minnesota to spend a couple months fishing this next summer. Any ideas?
  • I recommend moving along the North Shore (from Duluth to Grand Portage). Lake Superior provides a spectacular setting for base camp with fishing on the big lake or endless inland lakes all the way up.
The other thing I like about this area of MN is the variety of camping options. You can find State Forest CG for $14/night and municipal, state park, and private options with hookups etc. Also, Duluth, Two Harbors, Grand Marais, Ely, all good towns for basing out of.
  • If you expand on this a bit I may be of help. I live in the lakes area of Minnesota. Give me an idea of your expectations. Will you be towing a boat? Any other activities?

One central area would be the Duluth area. There is one campground we've stayed at several times. It is Ogston's RV Park off of hiway 53 on the NW side of Duluth. I'd plug in the link, but the link icon is not working right now. FHU with gravel pads but little shade. Plenty of space between sites. Their ponds have a variety of fish for the kids.

There are several campgrounds on Island Lake just north of Duluth on Rice Lake Road. Good walleye fishing with Boulder Lake next door.

Two Harbors, just about 20 miles north of Duluth on Hiway 61, has a new FHU campground on the "north" side of town. The sites will handle big motor homes.

Lots of campgrounds with nearby fishing.
  • Minnesota is the “Land of 10,000 Lakes”, although there are actually 11,842 that are 10 acres or more in size. The Ten Largest Lakes located entirely within the borders of Minnesota are:
1.Red Lake (both “Upper” and “Lower”) – 288,800 acres
    2.Mille Lacs Lake – 132,516 acres
    3.Leech Lake – 111,527 acres
    4.Lake Winnibigoshish – 58,544 acres
    5.Lake Vermilion – 40,557 acres
    6.Lake Kabetogama – 25,760 acres
    7.Mud Lake (Marshall County) – 23,700 acres
    8.Cass Lake – 15,596
    9.Lake Minnetonka – 14,004 acres
    10.Otter Tail Lake – 13,725 acres
  • I didn't know they had any lakes or places to fish in Minnesota. Is this something new?

    (sorry, I couldn't resist.)
  • Lots of places to fish, but what else do you want to do? Just fishing head for the Mille Lacs Lake area. Want to golf and have entertainment in eve head for the Brainerd Lakes area.
