By the way, Florida has some good county-run parks, too, along with the state parks.
Several people mentioned Fort DeSoto (one of my faves, too) which is owned and operated by Pinellas County. It's at the base of the Tampa Bay area, many sites face the water and kayaking is popular. The Park has a beautiful beach and a historic fort. Plenty of tent camping as well as RV camping, and one section designated for dog owners.
Note that county residents get first crack at sites ahead of the non-resident public. This is also true at Turtle Beach on Siesta Key, a Sarasota County-owned park on the Gulf of Mexico.
