Fontainebleau State Park

Last summer we rented a house on the bay with a boat slip in grand isle. My sister's family shared it with us (they are from CA) and my neices and nephews had so much fun playing with the hermit crabs in one of the boat slips (too much sediment to use). They made an entire hermit crab habitat lol. All I caught was catfish though. If you catch rock crabs, you can take one claw and then have to throw the crab back. It will regrown the claw (I think). I couldn't stand the thought of ripping the claw off a live crab, so I threw it back whole. My Other BIL (has a family camp on grand isle) told me I was missing out on a delicious crab claw.

Fontainebleau State Park is OK. The bath houses are new. The grounds are still recovering from hurricane damage. For a few nights, it will be fine. The campground does fill up during Mardi Gras.

Also, Venice, La has guides and charters you can hire to fish in the marshes. Caught off Breton Sound, Southeast La



This is a bull red-- not good eating. Sport catching.

Grand Isle is great for fishing. It is peaceful and quiet (unless you go during the tarpon rodeo, in that case it is a madhouse). You can go crabbing and there is a public pier where you can fish/night fish. It's not destin, so don't expect that. It is a nice, quiet family place with some good fishing,

A new "what if"! What if we wanted to try our hand at ocean fishing? Anything around this area or are we better off going more towards Gulfport, like Davis Bayou? Just searching.

With the time frame you gave seeing the Mouth of the Mississippi would be iffy at best even if you had transportation. It stays foggy probably 3/4 of the time. Cold river water vs. warm air that time of yr. make it happen.
You mentioned BBQ. Best shot is get some in Memphis on your way south. Big Easy area is probably the worst area of the country to find decent BBQ. Stick with what the Cajun/Creoles do best with Creole being the more spicy.

Lake Lincoln SP is on 55 way down South. It is a little off the beaten path but has a very pretty lake with RV sites right on the Lake. We stopped two years in a row. Not much around it but stayed 3 nights. Worth a look see.

Alright! Starting to narrow this thing down, I think!!!
Leaving the St Louis area for about two weeks and after a nights stop around either Enid Lake or Lake Grenada (down 55) might spend a night or two at Natchez SP and take in that town and what it has to offer. After that everything is up in the wind. Would like to see/stay at Tickfaw SP, Fairview Riverside SP, Fontainebleau SP, Bayou Segnette SP, St. Bernard SP and even Buccaneer State Park, MS before heading north. Again, not big on city attractions, but was told gotta see the French Market or some such thing. We are use to staying a night or two tops and hitting the road. What has this area have to offer other than warm weather for those who don't like spicy food, smokey bars nor crowded streets. Blues music and crawdads are just fine.
