Fontainebleau State Park

What is Fontainebleau State Park in say mid to late March, early April like? We're small B campers and just need electric and a near by shower house to survive. Would like to tour the area and possible take in New Orleans. Not big on night life, smoking bars, DW is chronic asthmatic, nor cajun food. Must see where the Mississippi empties into the Gulf! Need to try local BBQ and other types of non-spicy food.

St Bernard SP is nice. The downside is it can be an aggravation getting there if traffic is normal. Lots of residential and businesses on the north end. You'll get a nice drive thru the Ninth Ward. Just don't get lost. Not a lot to do down there without driving somewhere else.
  • The way to see the end of the Mississippi IMHO is to go to one of the small airports and find someone doing sightseeing tours in a small plane.

Probably more costly than a boat trip - but a much better view.

Living is St Louis, about the middle of the River, we want to see the lower end this spring. In the fall we plan to attend a rally/gathering of Sportsmobiles in Iowa and thought why not venture further north and see the headwaters of the River.
  • Even if you take a cruise, you can't see where the river meets the Gulf because you sail on that part at night. It's just a bunch of jetties. On one cruise, we left later than scheduled because of TS Bonnie and so we hit it during daylight. Interesting to see but literally nothing much there.
  • We have stayed at both Fairview and Fountainbleu SPs. If you prefer a concrete pads your best bet is Fairview. The smaller loop back by the river all have concrete pads. They also have a nice little boardwalk in the swamp for viewing plants and wildlife. The sites at Fountainbleu were blacktop and a little more rustic feeling. We saw campground deer everyday. Both were nice parks.
  • Fountainebleu is OK that time of year. Shouldn't be to many crowds unless it's Easter weekend.
Personally we like Fairview-Riverside SP a few miles west of Fountainbleu also on the north shore. Just personal preference. And Morton's Restaurant in Madisonville is closer to FRSP. Morton's is a nice family restaurant. We've always had good food.
On the south side we like Bayou Signette SP at Westwego. Easy access, sites are farther apart. Shower house has always been very clean.
While in NOLA you really should go to the French Quarter. If you're not into the loud, smokey bars then don't go in them. But the people watching is well worth a visit. Very entertaining.
Lots of good places to eat in the city. Everyone has their favorites.
RE seeing where the Mississippi River dumps into the Gulf - you do realize that you can't drive to the end of the Mississippi River? You can drive down as far as Venice but there's still land and the river runs farther on. You'll need a boat to go on. It's just swampland from there.
