Frances Slocum SP, PA

I'm researching a trip between Richmond, VA, and Saratoga Springs, NY. We'll need to overnight near Wilkes-Barre. I see this park is only 12 mi. off I-81 and might fill the bill.
Anyone stayed there?

  • We have never camped at Frances Slocum SP, but we have toured through it a couple of years ago. It would make a good overnight stop for you. Being close to the populous area, it can get crowded in the summer time.
  • A lot of people like the park trout stocked lake, hiking trails. Still think they have a pool. Believe its seasonal ,closed till spring. Also Hickory run SP, and rickets glen SP very popular
  • What's your route? going up to Scranton then 84 east? Lackawanna SP is just north of Scranton off 81. I hear Rickett's Glen is excellent too.

Thanks for the help. Anything north or east of Scranton is too far for one day (for us). We prefer to do 350 mi. a day, stopping to stretch, take the kitties into the trailer to use the litter box, etc. We'll be traveling during the week after school stars in Sept. so crowds shouldn't be an issue.

  • I have stayed at all the above mentioned parks and they are all very nice. However my favorite would have to be Ricketts Glen for the water falls trail, arguably the the most scenic SP in Pa. The down side is they don't have electric. Lackawanna SP has many hilly sites at least in the pet section. Frances Slocum SP has nice sites with electric and good hiking trails.

Thanks for the review. We'll be there for one night, arriving late afternoon and leaving early morning so park amenities (pool, lake, etc.) aren't a factor. Are the sites large enough so we could stay hitched?

  • It all depends on your length. I can tell you that the sites accommodate some fairly large motorhomes and fifth wheel rvs. They do have an information number 570-696-3525. Jimups

Made a note in my trip planner. Thanks for the number.

  • We have stayed at Frances Slocum SP several times and we know the area well. A few of the sites are deep enough to stay hooked up. It's a nice quite park and would make a good overnight stop, The 12 mile drive will be a good 20 minutes with traffic, and speaking of traffic 81 will be 55 mph for several miles before Wilkes Barre and several miles after also. So figure some extra time for your travels through this area.

That's what I want to hear. Thanks for the estimated travel time from I-81 to Slocum. My wife will want to know that. I've discovered her level of patience is inversely proportional to the distance from the camping spot. If I tell her it's a half hour and it's twenty minutes, all is good. Not so much the other way around.

I appreciate all this help. Anyone else?
