- TomG2ExplorerThanks for the tip. Our Singles group is always looking for stuff like that. (And I bet the shrimp are good)
- John_JoeyExplorerIf you want to spend some more money (or even get a group together) and make a day of it, you can always do a $15 shrimp tour prior to buying them. The tour does sell out though so reservations are good thing.
Brownsville shrimp tour. - DonPExplorerWe usually buy our shrimp from the Shrimp Outlet in the shrimp basin on HY 48 going toward Padre Island from Brownsville
Don - PawPaw_n_GramExplorerI'm old enough to remember getting fresh shrimp off the boat back in the 60s in south Louisiana and Alabama.
I'm also old enough to remember in the late 90s in south Louisiana - and fresh shrimp off the boat was no longer available. Only frozen.
As mentioned above the economics of shrimp fishing have changed - and 'fresh off the boat' just ain't available from commercial fishermen any longer. - lynndiwagonExplorerI would get a small ice chest and head on down to Zimco Marine. Also, I highly recommend the Shrimp Boat tour down there, it was very interesting and informative. After you do the tour you can buy fresh frozen shrimp, I think it's called "Texas Gold". There's really not any "fresh" shrimp, it's all flash frozen on the boat. It was explained that they cannot afford to go out daily and return with unfrozen shrimp due to the cost of fuel. They go out for weeks at a time before returning. You will learn all of this on the tour. After the tour you probably will not ever eat shrimp imported from China, or any of the far east shrimp farmers. I won't touch anything but wild caught Gulf Shrimp. I think HEB has their own shrimp fleet down there.
- Teacher_s_PetExplorerThere was a small seafood shop across from Wells Fargo on Conway north of Pecan in Mission, haven't noticed if it's still there this year.
- pawattExplorerThey are also sold at the Brownsville flea market but I don't know the details.
- Cool_CanuckExplorerAlong the Brownsville/Port Isabel Hwy Zimco Marine has various pkg sizes and shrimp count. I was told the shrimp is flash frozen on the trawler and therefore frozen. Not fresh. There might be another source in the same area. They are not open on Sundays.
- mikeleblanc413ExplorerDitto's on HEB Plus...I prefer the large brown.
- TomG2ExplorerThanks. I am familiar with HEB. I was hoping for that guy whose brother has a shrimp boat and sells his catch daily at a great price. Meanwhile, I will stick with the supermarket.
