From Columbus, OH to Wheeling, WV

I'm planning on staying somewhere between Columbus (5 hour trip) to Wheeling (7 hour trip). The purpose is for a layover on our way to our destination in Eastern WV. Can you help me with a decent place to kick back for the evening?

Buckeye Lake KOA - nice but comes with a $83/night charge (4 people at/over 18).
Wolfies CG in Zanesville - ?????

Others?

  • I live between Columbus and wheeling. Barkcamp SP would be my recommendation. The private campgrounds around here are full(not literally) of oil and gas industry workers living in their rvs. Haven't been to Barkcamp yet this year but the fact that there is a 14 day limit would keep most of the workers from staying there. It is about 2-3 miles from I70, exit 208. If you are just wanting a place to pull over for the night (boondock) PM me. I can probably fix you up. EZ on and off I70. Just up the road from me, on my property. Nothing fancy, just a wide spot in the road. Nice view though. Off one exit then back on the next one. Less than 1/4 mi out of your way. Let me know. Gary
  • Wolfies is an ok stop and you can visit Dresden too from there.
  • Hi Brian, I'm from the northern panhandle and currently live in the eastern panhandle. Austin Lake in Toronto, Ohio is where we stay when we go up and visit family. It's 34 miles north of Wheeling. Nice quiet campground and the Owner Bill is very friendly and helpful. The only downfall to this beautiful campground is that the road in and out is steep... as in low gear the mile to the campground. But once you are there it's so quiet and well maintained. We stay there in April and the premium sites last year were $45 a night. Private message me if you would like pictures and more info. I can also give you info on my neck of the woods.

  • If it is just an overnight stop you want Salt Fork State Park. Also Columbus is only 2 hours from Wheeling. Spring Valley at he Cambridge exit is OK nothing spectacular but we've staid there and it was safe. https://www.campspringvalley.com/

You will be able to drive through WV to Pa in less than 3 hours.

Buckeye Lake sucks. PM me we live in Columbus and travel that area often.

  • I assume you are traveling on I-70. The state park campground at Lake Barkcamp is an option to consider. Electric only but some nice spots which can handle your trailer. We've noticed lots of horse owners use this location.
