Gas can mount on top of spare tire on back wall of trailer

If you already have a good way to transport your gas for your generator, stop reading – this post is a waste of your time.

But if you have a very small trailer with the spare on the back and no good way to transport your gas can (a fairly common set of circumstances), this may be of interest.

This blog post lays out, step by step, how I built a secure mount for the gas can. Here is a picture of the finished product:

As you’ll see if you read the blog post, this mod results in greater stability for the whole spare tire assembly – it reduces the road vibration substantially. Fair warning -- the blog post has lots of detail and lots of photos. Here’s the link:

Gas can on top of spare tire
  • old guy, you are absolutely right -- the strap would be completely inadequate. That's why the primary support is provided by two half inch steel threaded rods, secured into a very beefy angle steel cross-bar. The strap is just to cut down further on the vibration of the tire.
  • Nice setup. Do you have to remove the cans and crate to access the spare tire? Or will the tire slide out from under the support shelf?

Never mind, I read your link. :S
    Great write-up and pics.
  • Did you read his post old guy? More than strap holding it on it think
  • I am not too sure about this. if you only have the strap holding it on by going abound the tire you won't have that gas can very long. the car behind you will have it in his hood. you are one step away from an accident and law suit.
  • D'oh! Posted this in the wrong place. Moderator, can you rescue me from my own negligence? This should be in Modifications.

    Sigh.
  • I should add (in fact, I am adding) that that photo does not show the key feature of the mount -- as explained in excruciating detail in the blog post, there are beefy steel rods attached very securely to the trailer that take the brunt of the weight of the gas can assembly. The fact that the gas can and the crate rest on the tire is almost irrelevant, except to the extent that the contact between the wooden platform and the tire results in a lot less road vibration for both the tire and the gas can.
