Gatlinburg Area Needing Campground Near Hiking Trails

We are headed to Gatlinburg, TN for a class in March. We would like to go up the weekend before and do some hiking. I would like to be in a more wooded campground. We did Pine Mountain in Pigeon Forge and it was WONDERFUL, but we want a little more scenery for this trip and preferably a little closer into Gatlinburg. If there is a campground that will allow us to leave the travel trailer that would be a bonus, but not a necessity as we have a free hotel in Gatlinburg for the class! Also we have small kids so playgrounds are a plus.

  • I like Creekside in Pigeon Forge. You can be at hiking trails in 20 minutes. Creekside has full hook up and pull through.
  • I was going to mention Townsend as there we stayed when my daughter moved out In fact I brought land there as we enjoyed it so much The name of the campground escapes me but its right on the river Really nice people run and your kids might enjoy a float trip but it can be hassle to get to Gatlinburg Not sure if you know about this place pretty cool place to vistghost town Enjoy your trip

Too bad you have to have a site with hookups... The Smoky Mtn Natl Park camp grounds are all available at a great price and even half of that if you have a Senior Pass. They of course do not have hookups...

We are setup for camping off the power grid and love to stay at these places. We stay at ELKMONT when we go to Gatlinburg. Can do just fine inside the Natl Park running off our 255AH battery bank and then run our 2KW generator each morning connected to the on-board converter/charger and recharge our batteries back up to their 90% charge state each day. This takes around three hours of generator run time....

The camp grounds outside the Natl Park on the Townsend side of the area might be more affordable. Townsend is very close to the entrance of the Natl Park on the Cades Cove side of the park...
