We have "done" Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge for the past 7 years for Thanksgiving and we always stay at Pine Mtn RV Park in PF. We have stayed at Twin Creek in Gatlinburg and many more of the campgrounds in PF, but this is our favorite.
Most all of the campgrounds have trolley service, so that is not really a consideration.
It is a newer park, only being there for about 7-8 years, so the trees are still growing in the pull-thru sites. The sites next to the creek have mature trees. The owner of the park also owns the hotel next door, so you have swimming rights at the hotel. There is a good size indoor pool and large hot tub. After a day of site-seeing and shopping (if that's for you), that hot tub feels awfully good.
It is a FHU park and there are camping cabins there, as well.
It is located at traffic light #6 and the last one going into Gatlinburg is #10. All the outlets, most of the hotels and many of the restaurants are at the low # lights, so you don't have that much traffic to deal with. The bypass, which goes to the Sugarland Welcome Center, is just past light #10 before you get to Gatlinburg, so you can head up to the mountains without hitting Gatlinburg.
Dollywood is at traffic light #8 and you are fairly close.
The lights at that time of the year are fantastic. There is a trolley that will take you around to see all the lights, but it books up quickly. If you would be interested, book your trip well in advance.
Just my $.02 worth.
