Another problem we keep running into occasionally is that they want a US zip code (I know about adding the 2 zero's at end but this doesn't always work).
What we are looking for is a bank and visa that will allow us to attach a US address to the account and send us our statements electronically.
Time to change banks. I used to use RBC for many years and finally got fed up and moved to TD and it's turned out great for the 10 years or so I've been there. As mentioned, TD is all over the US now. You can get a TD US dollar VISA which is what we did. Sit down with an account manager at the bank and explain what you need. There are a lot of options available. A US debit card is also a good idea for use at places like gas stations that offer a cash discount.
Don't know if you are near the border. We have a US mailbox just across the border that we use a lot and we use that address for our US dollar VISA card. Solves any issues where somebody wants a zip code like at gas stations.
It's a good idea to have at least 2 credit cards with you that you can use in the US. We have had our card compromised several times in the US that prompted us to get the separate US $$ VISA. We also gave it a small maximum and daily limit on it in case some crook(s) hack it. Never ever let your card out of your sight when traveling around...
If you haven't got it now, setting up online banking may help if you will be away for a while.
