Well, I did a survey around Tucson, and it appears all the major banks now have monthly fees for even a simple chequing account. However, the Credit Unions don't. There are two branches of the Tucson Federal Credit Union nearer to us than the Wells Fargo bank we are (soon to be were !) using. It seems to be well funded, good computer facilities, ATMs, etc. I looked at another Credit Union, but it wasn't as sophisticated and only had one branch near us. The major advantage of a nearby home banking facility, is that sometimes you still need to have cash in your wallet. With this Credit Union, we'll be able to withdraw cash with no $2 to $5 fee. TD American Bank doesn't have Branches in Tucson, so I guess we'd have to withdraw from a "foreign" ATM, which opens us up to possibly paying a fee. Yes, we can, and do sometimes, get cash from a retail store, but they have low limits, e.g. $20 to $80. Another advantage is that Tucson Federal is well known around here, whereas most people/stores have never heard of TD American. I can imagine some stores maybe not accepting a Visa card from TD. And we can open an account now, while we are here. And the TD American guy on the East Coast was less friendly than the person I talked to in the Credit Union ! So problem solved. Boo to Wells Fargo for making me have to do the research ! But maybe the change will be to our advantage.
