Gettysburg, Pa

My family and I are going to Gettsyburg, Pa for an early fall camping trip (early Oct). Staying at Artillery Ridge Campground. This is our first trip to Gettsyburg. Suggestions on attractions we should not miss. We have a 3 year old.
  • The first 2 weekends of October is the Apple Harvest Festival in Gettysburg. Lots of fun.
  • Get a very early start each day, the crowds are late risers. I enjoy bicycling the park and try to be off the road before 11AM. Biking and horseback riding may not be for you with the child, but the early start applies to any battlefield activity.

I see that the horseback riding at the campground has a minimum age of 7, but walking around and viewing the horses would be nice for the kid.

I like the Mexican restaurant east of the square.
  • Thank you for all of the suggestions so far! Keep the ideas coming! You are all awesome!!
  • For the 3-year-old I'll suggest a side trip to Land of Little Horses, west of Gettysburg off of Rt. 30.
  • The Visitor Center is wonderful. Be sure to buy your bus tour tickets there, as they cost less than in town. The museum there is very good, and the place you absolutely must go is the Cyclorama located at the Visitor Center. You feel as if you are actually in the middle of the battle. I recommend you go to the Cyclorama before you go on the bus tour, because it brings out the events of the battle better than just listening to the guide. Our bus tour guide was very good and much better than an audio tape, since you can ask questions that may not be addressed in the audio tape.
  • We've been to Gettysburg several times and have always had a great time.

Start with the visitor's center. There are movies, a great display of the battle and the cyclorama. There are usually various talks by Rangers at different stations around the center.

We took the auto tour which is great. I'm not sure what the tolerance for this will be with a 3 yo though.

Stroll down Main Street. Theres plenty of historic places and shops to pop into. Have an ice cream at the canon ball ice cream shop, so named for the canon ball still sticking from e side of the building.

Visit Eisenhowers estate, it's very interesting.

See if there is a ghost tour geared towards youngsters.
