It's been over 5 years since we visited Glacier National Park and when we went, it was early September. This time we plan to go mid September so I'm looking for feedback on the weather for that time of year and if it's any different than early September. I know I can google this information and have, but I'd like feedback from all you RV'ers who've visited and stayed in the park mid September on. I found this page on weather conditions at that time of year indicating gusts of winds more prevalent then. When we visited in early September, in the past, I don't recall it being windy. We are planning on staying either at Two Medicine or St. Mary's, as long as the current fire condition continues to improve. I do remember it raining and when visiting the East side, not as much rain and more sun, which does match this article. Thanks for your feedback.

We visited both sides of the park in June, the west side via Banff. There have been reports that the town of St Mary and maybe the St Mary's KOA were damaged by the fire. I couldn't find any info on that online the KOA seems to be reopened. But I think this is a year to either do the west side or wait another year to visit. I hate hiking in smokey air it ruins the whole experience.

The other thing I might mention is that the last time I was there after the long weekend in september things were starting to close in the park for the season. Not sure on the exact day things actually close, but I would look into it.

Thank you and for the link too. We'll watch for it. GNP site says that most of the park is unaffected and campgrounds are still showing full statuses. We won't be leaving for another month, so that will help.

Years ago when we visited there, we stayed at the KOA near Apgar and it was smokey. Per the report of weather that time of year, it's windier so that may help the smoke.

Also, how "mid" Sept. This year Going to the Sun closes 21 Sept (thru traffic) to allow for road work. The closure is from the pass, eastward to eastward to Saint Mary. The road will still be open from West Glacier to the summit until mid Oct (unless heavy early snow happens)

Thanks! I checked and certain things will still be open at that time. DH and I just want to get away for a couple of weeks and possibly go into Canada too. As long as the little store in Polebridge will be open for a bakery treat, that's good for me!

We are planning to be up there the week of September 14.

It's the Reynold's Fire, right?

Yes, it's the Reynold's Creek fire (link). It is expected to burn until the snow falls or they get a lot of rain, but they expect to be able to open the road this year. Some of the fire areas are just too steep to manage.

If the fire is still burning, you will be downwind if you are on the east side of the park. The smoke isn't too bad but it is hanging in the valley by Saint Mary.

Our favorite spot to camp down there is Lake Five Resort on the west side. There are a lot of seasonal folks who will have cleared out by then. It's a beautiful spot by a lake just a few miles west of the park.
