Glacier National Park to Wisconsin stops

Starting to look at our summer trip next year. The plan is a 3+ week road trip from Seattle area to Wisconsin, spending the last 5-6 days in Glacier National Park before coming home.

We’ve covered Seattle to Glacier before and I grew up in WI, so we’re looking for your favorite places to spend time between Glacier and Wisconsin. Plan is to go through south Dakota one way and north the other.

We like to hike and sight see and get out and about. I’m figuring we’ll have time for 1-3 short stops each direction depending on what they are.

I'm thinking Teddy Roosevelt and Badlands NP? Deadwood will probably be a stop as I'm a fan of that era.

Thanks!

  • Blackhills are our favorite. Also Minnesota has some beautiful small towns.
US 212 from Crow Agency to Sturgis is the longest stretch of nothing we have found in the US. It is an incredible drive (just make sure you have everything filled up before starting it is 260 or so miles before you hit the next gas station!)

To help planning this is a great tool we use big map
  • We've taken Hwy 2 over to Michigan a few times...a very nice drive. Plan to stop at Fort Peck, MT - the campground is gorgeous with huge grassy spots.
  • Take the bus tour of the Badlands and the Ranger talks in T. Roosevelt NP and find out why the bison and prairie dogs get along so well?
  • Teddy Roosevelt is good (remember, it's dry camping in the park). I second the recommendation for Little Bighorn National Battlefield. There are self-drive tours or van tours of the park, and a ranger presentation every hour, which are all different - it's worth spending at least half a day there.

Jamestown ND has the biggest buffalo in the world (a statue, that is) but there's a neat museum there with some area history, and a white buffalo on the grounds (live). Kind of a fun stop for a few hours.
  • On your way back, try taking U.S. hwy 2 instead of I94, it is a nice drive!
