Grand Canyon in October?

What is your opinion of going to the south rim in October? Deciding between Williams cg in Sept. Or waiting until second week of October, so we can get into Trailer Village.

  • been to the Canyon a few times. GREAT PLACE! Oct should be fine. I'd try for inside the park. Good luck getting one

Stay at Trailer Village, you won't regret that decision!

Was there last year in October. North Rim first, for the last week of operations for the campground, then moved around to the South Rim and Trailer Village. Great place to stay, there's a shuttle right at their entrance that will take you anywhere within the park that you want to go.

Agree with others who recommend calling them, but be prepared to be put on hold. While checking in last year, the nice lady that was working there got several phone calls inquiring about available sites (there were available site), but she had to put the callers on hold to deal with folks checking in. She was by herself in the early afternoon, and just had to juggle things until someone else came in to assist her. You may not experience this when/if you call, but just a heads up.
  • I used to herd cattle in No AZ every October on the Mogollon Rim which is similar in elevation to the GC So Rim. It was cold in the morning around 12-15 degrees, but warm every day with little wind. Great time to be in AZ.

We stayed at the canyon in late October a few years ago -- great weather. We were able to see sunrises over the canyon, sunsets (of course), and stars at night, without having to drive from Williams.

    Bring a sweatshirt, though!

We visited the GC many years ago before we ever thought about an RV. We stayed in little cottages of Bright Angel Lodge. OMG! Sunrise over the Canyon is a sight I will never forget. We were there in November, cold nights and mild days.

  • We stayed in Trailer Village mid Oct, 2016. Weather was great.
  • I agree with 2gypsies part about calling directly to the Park. The DW looks on line and then calls and makes reservations. We don't make a lot of reservations but you absolutely must at times and anytime at Trailer Village it's a good idea.

We like the desert so for us the drive is not boring, especially during the spring and fall and very early in the morning. We left about 6:30 on a drive to Williams from the park and saw 24 Prong Horn Antelope. Often at 45 mph there is a lot to see. We try to plan an overnight in Williams before going to the Park and the trip up in the morning is nice as well.

Stay in the park for the best experience. It's a boring long drive from Williams to the Canyon and how often would you do it? If you want to see and do things at the Canyon don't waste time driving back and forth. Did you try calling Trailer Village rather than using the reservation site?
I plan to do that, was first getting feed back here. Thanks for your help.

  • GC is a great place in the fall. October is not too late for the South Rim. I spent a month in a wall tent running a tree planting crew outside Williams in April. We had some snow but it did not last long.

I have visited the Park in Dec and had a great time.
