Our favorite campground for the Tetons is Gros Ventre. We have also stayed a couple of times at Atherton Creek. Gros Ventre is closer to Jackson and the places of interest in the Park. Atherton Creek has the advantage of being adjacent to Slide Lake and is smaller and quieter. If you have a boat, it's nice paddling around on the lake. The road is paved as far as the entrance to Atherton Creek but the pavement between the national park boundary and the campground was in poor shape the last time we were there (June 2012). Lots of potholes. Beyond the campground the road is gravel and was smoother than the paved portion. Some nice scenery a few miles up the gravel road.
In September you May see Moose with full racks south of Gros Ventre along the river and possibly also in the campground.
