Gulf Shores, AL

Does anyone have any recommendations for the best "Beach" campground around the Gulf Shores, AL area? Our family would like to make the trip from KY to a beach and Gulf Shores, Destin, Orange beach, etc... Those are closes for us. About 7.5 hrs. Just want to be on the beach with good swimming access.

Any suggestions or even pictures are greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
  • Gulf State park. We stayed there last Oct during fall break and we had a great time. If you dont want to make the trip in one day there is a really nice campground call South Montgomery campground. less than a mile off I-65. i think it was 21.00 for full hook up.
  • Thank you everyone for all the responses. I have enjoyed researching all of these online and didn't know there were so many great locations!

Add a great nature center with many local critters, large sites, paved roads and sites, store in the cg, and a big blue store just north of the park.

    We plan to go again.
  • Topsail Hill in Destin is a great campground. The beach is about a 1/2 mile or so from the campground. You can take the tram to the beach or ride bikes (we've walked it too). Very nice campground (full hookups and even cable TV).

Fort Pickens, Loop A, is very close to the beach. You just walk across Fort Pickens Road, down the boardwalk and you're there. As someone stated above, the campground isn't the nicest (they do not have full hookups, but do have a dumping station), but the proximity to the beach is nice.

One word of warning about Fort Pickens. The road that leads to the campground, Fort Pickens Road, is prone to flooding and, therefore, closure. Last year we went to Fort Pickens, but we had to evacuate due to Topical Storm Debbie. Fort Pickens Road was closed for a few days due to sand that washed up on the road.
  • We enjoyed swimming at the Perdido Key National Seashore. There was a 10 minute drive there from Big Lagoon SP which was no biggie to us.
  • Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores AL. Great beach access, bike trails, restaurants and plenty of neat things to do beyond the beach. We were there for Spring Break this year and had a blast!

  • Henderson Beach or Topsail are by far your best choices. We stayed at Ft.Pickens, if you stay in A loop, the beach is right there and beautiful, but the cg leaves a lot to be desired.
  • In April we stayed in Pensacola at Fort Pickens. You just have to walk across the road to the beach. It was great!
