Help with new England

Just as an FYI, NY is not a part of New England.

Regrettably pretty much all of New England is expensive due to the short season. Massachusetts doesn't have a lot of state parks for camping. Honestly, though, if you can swing it in the budget I would bite the bullet and come anyway. It's worth it.

Might want to give it a look. 80+ state parks with electric sites, miles and miles of sandy Great Lakes beaches, thousands of acres of hiking, biking, etc. There are hundreds of primitive state forest campgrounds with pit toilets and hand pump water wells, all of which are situated on or very near a body of water. If you really want seclusion, dispersed camping (free of charge) is allowed on hundreds of square miles of state forest lands. There are also plenty of private RV resort style parks with full hookups, paved pads, swimming pools, etc.

I don't know which state parks you've been looking at in NY, but the dozen or so we've stayed in all had at least 30 amp electric, with some 50 amp sites. A few parks even have full hookups in at least some sections. The only primitive camping parks are those in the Adirondacks and Catskills run by the DEC. The 66 parks with camp sites run by the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation are generally better choices for RV'ers that want amenities.

Our favorite is ALLEGANY STATE PARK in NY it has 65,000 acres, you can find it on www.ReserveAmerica.com. there are two camping areas Red House is near a lake and activities and Quaker- Cain Hollow mostly in the woods.

Another is Letchworth SP with its beautiful Genesee River Valley and waterfalls.

All have elec. with water and dump available in each area.

I haven't looked at Michigan yet. That is "plan B".
I realize some folks really dislike RV's,think they're ugly, consume too many resources, and their owners want to build RV parks encircling Old Faithfull and the Grand Canyon. No not really. I think we can all get along in the same spot if we're separated enough.

South loop has 30 amp W/E sites. Wood bridge to south side of campground can be a tough crossing for the larger RV's but that said I saw plenty of large class A's on the sough loop, something just to be aware of.

You do have to keep in mind that the cost of setting up utilities at the sites is no cheaper in the North than in the South, while the camping season is less than half as long. (Depending on the terrain and vegetation, it could be a good bit more expensive to install in many places, at least compared to my memories of much of Texas, but that's much more variable.) For my part, I'm always somewhat incredulous and envious when I read of other parts of the country where full hookup sites are available for less than, say, $30 a night.

Anyhow, the majority of state parks with camping do have dump stations and potable water fill stations and showerhouses with hot showers. If electricity isn't available, there generally are generator hours (sometimes rather limited ones, a couple hours in the morning and a couple in the evening). If you pick your parks carefully and have even a little luck with the timing, you might not need air conditioning at all.

New York does have some state parks with electric hookups at some sites and relatively reasonable prices. Vermont has no hookups at any campsites, save for the volunteer/camp host sites. Those are the states I'm most familiar with the state parks in (or, at least, the least unfamiliar with them).

Burlington North Beach campground, operated by the City of Burlington, VT, has some sites with hookups...for the bargain price of $45 per night. The beach is very nice (and popular), the campground adequate but nothing special.

The solution is indeed right there. State Parks are designed for those that can carry water, keep their sewage, and run a fan instead of an air conditioner. Most state park campers like the peace and quiet, and learn to economize because they are enjoying the best places for tourism in their area. The government long ago made these places special, and it's up to the users that frequent them to keep them that way.
Don't run your generators unless you really need them, know your batteries needs, and only run generators to recharge, not for a/c. Take the time to walk the park and see how others treat it, then act like one of the best customers, not the worst.

If this doesn't sit well, and sometimes there are real reasons why, just take your rig to the RV Park, plug in, get what you paid for, relax and enjoy the time away.

You must be looking at primitive accommodations like forest campgrounds. Michigan state park campgrounds all have electrical hookups. Few have water and sewer, but they do have dump stations, showerhouses, etc. I assume most other states are the same.
