Hocking Hill State Park OH

The state park is very nice. They opened up a full hookup loop 2yrs ago and those sites are much bigger and nicer. The rest are pretty tight and not full hookup. There is also a KOA right down the road if that sort of thing interests you. I'm of no help on the boondocking.

The sites we always try to get are 68 or 69 in camping area 1. 69 is our favorite because just down over the hill behind you is a nice trail to hike, it seems a little more private. The drawback is that the water tower is very close and the showers and restrooms(if you need them) are a good distance away. These are the only 2 sites we have ever been in-we've always gone in early spring. In the summer they may be pretty hard to get. Another benefit of early spring is the wet weather causes all the waterfalls in the area around to be running at a pretty good capacity, really neat to see as opposed to summer when there is just a trickle, if that. But really, it looks like any site in the park is decent. We're planning on doing Hocking Hills a couple times this year also. Gary

We live pretty close to the Hocking Hills and we like staying at the new sites with full hook-ups. We also stayed at the KOA, but I found it to be a bit crowded and overpriced. If you're looking to boondock in the area, then you'll have to stay further away in Wayne National Forest. You can check out their website to view the dispersed campsites they have.

We always stay at the State Prk. Most sites are very nice. By all means visit during the wet season when the falls at Old mans and Ash caves are flowing.

You can boondock in the Wayne National Forest down the road a ways, but I don’t recommend it. Too many people I know have experienced break ins and theft.

They did make sites 24-70 all FHU a few years ago but they are also the most desirable and you better book 6 months ahead of time if you want them in peak season. I would stay away from sites 24-26-28-30-31 as there is a water treatment behind them and they can smell a little.

Sites 63-64-70-69-68-67-66-65-62 etc.. are all nice. I like 63 myself because there is a good amount of land between the next site and if you have kids they have a lot of running around room.

They have redone the welcome center and its very nice now unlike the little 10x10 hut they used to have where to get to the campground you literally had to drive across a little stream.

We go a few times a year up there and I always tell my wife the truck has earned its paycheck going up those roads.

If you are not locked on Hocking Hills there are two other very ice state parks near. Lake Hope and Lake Alma both are relaxing and well kept.
