How long to book in GC & YellowStone

We can hike around a few miles at clip.

I think we need to know what your level of physical activity is. Some people can/will only walk a few hundred feet from their vehicle so they can see what they can see in a few days. If you don't mind hiking a few miles to visit the geyser basins, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Mt. Washburn, etc., you can easily spend several weeks if you're so inclined. Similarly, there's some good hiking in nearby Grand Teton NP.

Will do you get out and do some walking or not?

We have almost a hundred days in Yellowstone over the last six years and have not yet seen some of the wildlife attractions (wolves hunting, etc.)

If you will be traveling West through New Mexico and Arizona on I-40 there is a lot to see along that corridor including:
In New Mexico
Bandelier National Monument, Petroglyph National Monument, El Malpais National Monument, El Moro National Monument, Acoma Sky City, Pueblo Cultural Center, Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano, Tucumcari, The Blue Hole, Mining Museum, and Turquoise Trail.

In Arizona
Petrified Forest National Park, Meteor Crater, Homolovi Ruins State Park, Sunset Crater National Monument, Wupatki National Monument, Walnut Canyon National Monument, Montezuma Castle and Montezuma Well National Monuments, Tuzigoot National Monument, Palatki and Honaki Ruins, V-Bar-V Heritage Site, Verde Canyon Railroad, Fort Verde State Park, Cathedral Rock, Gold King Mine, and Jerome State Historic Park.

Yes, a month at the Grand Canyon is much too long. Unless you're a serious hiker, 4 days will do. Also, try to get a site at Trailer Village IN the park itself. It's so convenient and you can pick up the free shuttle right at the campground. You can ride all day long getting on and off wherever.

There are so many wonderful national parks in southern Utah - Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands. Move around to each of them. You can't do them all from one location. You'll save a LOT of driving and it will be a more relaxing trip.

For Yellowstone, 5-7 days would be plenty. You won't need air conditioning and there are some nice dry campgrounds in the park with water fill and dump stations. If you're looking for full hookups, Fishing Bridge in the park has them.

Don't forget that Grand Teton Nat'l Park is right next door and warrants another 4 days or so, especially if you like some nice short hikes in gorgeous scenery. Both parks are completely different. For the Tetons we like to stay in Gros Ventre or Colter Bay campgrounds (300 non-reservable sites in each - arrive by noon and you'll get a site). There's also Colter Bay RV park with full hookups right next to Colter Bay campground.

You're going to be in Yellowstone during prime time, so make reservations! If you want to stay inside the park, Fishing Bridge is your only option with hookups, and it may be already booked up, as they start taking reservations more than a year ahead. Camping at Grizzly RV in West Yellowstone is the most convenient outside-the-park location, IMO, and it's a nice CG to boot. I concur that a week for YNP + Tetons is good, and more time is better if you want to avail yourselves of the various activities and/or do lots of hiking. With the amount of time you are allowing for GC, you might consider staying at different places in Yellowstone and surrounding areas, as commutes will be long from any one "central" location. As previously mentioned, travel through the park is relatively slow due to traffic, animal jams, photo stops, and the like.

We stayed at Trailer Village at GC for 4 nights and were able to see most of what we wanted at the actual canyon. Areas nearby that are really worth the visit are Sedona AZ, Las Vegas, and Zion National park in Utah. In Vegas, we stayed at Oasis RV Resort for 2 nights, just to check that off our bucket list. We enjoyed Vegas and the campground was very nice, and is a Passport America park if you are a member (1/2 price sites). We stayed at Watchman Campground in Zion and it was beautiful there. (Stayed 5 days and could have stayed more.). Do not miss Zion if you are in that area. It was absolutely breathtaking. As for Yellowstone.....we stayed 9 nights there in 2008 and could have stayed that many more if time had allowed.

The north rim of the GC is a MUST SEE. Also stay on the South Rim--listen to Ranger presentations, take a helicopter ride over the canyon. Other tips by other travelers are all great!

Since the average time spent at the South Rim for tourists is 3 hours a month seems like a long time UNLESS you are going to be hiking, horseback riding, etc but still that seems long.
I'd search this Forum for Yellowstone for more info but I think 3 or 4 days is enough to get a flavor of the park.
