We are planning a trip to the northern shore of Lake Superior in August. From home in Eastern Iowa, it is a little longer drive than we want to make in one day. I would like to get through the Twin Cities and then find a nice campground along the I 35 corridor. We have two young children. A pool would be great but not necessary. Electricity only would be sufficient for one night. Any ideas anyone?

There is a campground at the Running Aces Horse Racing place in Forest Lake, then, the next one that I know is at the casino in Hinckley, MN. Not sure of the amenities at Forest Lake, as it has been several years since I was there, but they did have electric. The Hinckley cg is nice, fhu. Don't remember a pool, but there is a playground and probably a pool at the casino. I would recommend calling and get reservations at both places asap, I know Hinckley is very busy.

Another one is Pokegama Lake RV Park at Pine City, MN. It's about 4 miles west of I-35 and not as far as Hinckley.http://www.woischkes.com/index.html

There are several MN state parks near the Twin Cities that offer camping and most have about 50% of their campsites with electricity. Making a reservation will be mandatory, because this year MN State Parks made ALL of their campgsites reservable.

Rice Creek is on the north end of the citys, they have a nice beach for the kids.

Keep in mind Hinckley puts you an hour outside of Duluth. At that point if it where me I'd just keep going and get to Duluth area.

Thanks for the advice. Hinckley is 6hr 9min from our home. Duluth is 7hr 20min. From experience, 6:09 is much better with two small children, 3 & 1. Our destination is Grand Marais. We will be spending three nights in the Duluth area after our stay in GM so another night in Duluth isn't so important.
