Is nuevo progresso still safe?

We will be staying in Port Isabel, tx this winter and plan to go to Nuevo Progress. We haven't heard or read any updates as to the Cartel problem on the other side and would like to hear from others who have recently gone there.
  • Made our second trip today. All is well. Welcome back Winter Texans celebration is this Friday.

Does anyone know why Garcia's closed?

They would not say, but the farther business's are from the bridge, the less business they are getting. People jump across the border for their meds and right back across to their vehicles. This Friday should be fun as they welcome back the Winter Texans.
  • Well, we spent the day there today. Good food, cold drinks, friendly vendors and a very festive atmosphere. Lots of music in the streets and restaurants. A good time and the crowd is growing but only took about 4 minutes going through customs coming back.
  • You really can't compare Matamoros to Nuevo Progreso. Even I do not go to Matamoros or Renosa.
  • I don't know if you can draw a true comparison from this, but that sounds a little like Matamoros. Neighbors would go there for R&R. Then they would makes sure they got what they needed and back by noon. Now only the hardy go over for lunch, or those that refuse to change their habits, then they go in a group of 6-8.
  • Observing the parking lot, it appears that people are arriving early, but not staying long. They run in, get their meds, and leave. Once popular places like Arriba's and Garcia's are now closed. People must not want to venture as far from the bridge as they used to.
  • Our friends have been going regularly without issues, 2 neighbors going tomorrow, we are going Thursday.
  • It was okay two weeks ago. It is a little edgy to see the young soldiers walking around with their weapons though. If you check with the government agencies involved, they will say to stay north of the border.
