Jalama Beach; 2 Questions

We're going to Jalama Beach for the first time in a couple of weeks.

2 questions: What's the best route to take coming up from southern California, say, the Pasadena area?

Question #2: The Jalama website says there is no overflow parking. We had planned to have some friends join us for an overnight stay. Where can they park their vehicle, or is this going to be a big problem?

I live in Pasadena, and we went to Jamala a couple of weeks ago. Check google maps. If the 134 has not traffic through the valley, then that is the shortest route, otherwise take the 210 - 118 - 23 - 101 route. After the 101 turns inland after gaviota take the 1. It will take about 3 hours with no traffic.

There are parking lots all over the place! There are a lot of day visitors. Also, many of the sites are large, with undefined pads parking, so you could get two cars easily.

The drive was not bad, and really pretty!

Thanks for the info, and regarding the parking we would need overnight parking for one extra vehicle. Total would be our truck and TV plus one extra car.

  • I'm sorry if I concerned you, if you are decent at handling your rig you can make it out there. It's just not an easy road. The last combination I pulled was Chevy extended cab 1500 and a 26' TT, all I we were likely 45'. My current set up is a Duramax crew cab and 33.5' TT, we are now closer to 55'. I'm sure I could still make it, but for me I like Pismo Beach, El Capitan and Refugio just as much; all of which present absolutely no challenge to get to so we go there instead.

In the spring and early summer it can be windy. Later summer and fall this is much less of an issue.

Thanks for the info folks. I'm pulling a 35ft TT so this road has me worried now. Is the 35ft TT doable?
  • I took our 36' motor home towing a jeep out the 14 mile road. No trouble at all.

  • You will need a second site for overnight guests.

The drive from 1 out to the beach is twisty and slow. I did it towing a 26' trailer, don't think I would want to with my 33' TT.
  • West on the 210, west on the 134, north on US 101, northwest on the Pacific Coast Highway (SR 1) just north of the Gaviota tunnel. About 13 miles or so to the turn for Jalama.
  • I would take 101 to 1, being from Northern Calif. can't help you getting to 101.

We had a family gathering at Jalama last summer. They are very strict about over night of extra autos. I emailed the ranger before visit and he said no. We got a second campsite to fit all autos in. We had 3 vehicles.

The 14 mile road in from 1 is very slow going.

It is very windy in the afternoon.

They evacuate the park when there is a launch at Vandenberg. We had to drive back to 1 for 4 hours one morning.

    Enjoy
