Though it sounds like the park probably screwed up, I can tell you from experience that people often hear what they want to hear, not what they are told. I can't begin to count the number of people who make reservations online and then arrive to tell us they specifically requested this or that. We save all the online requests, so we pull up their request and, lo and behold, none of those special requests are anywhere to be found.
And it is almost a daily occurrence that someone will drive up saying they have reservations and after some research we find those reservations are at another park. Sometimes they are at a park close by and sometimes they aren't. often the guest has a copy of the reservation in hand, yet can't quite comprehend why we won't honor a reservation made at another park.
