Just spent several hours at the Convention Center for granddaughter's HS graduation (takes a long time for 1,200+ kids to cross the stage).
You are going to have to commute to make the event at the Convention Center. Driving not only puts you in the middle of rush hour AM and PM traffic, but will include parking charges of $15 per day at the Convention Center, or at least $10 per day at other area lots.
We normally stay at a COE campground on Lake Lavon. East Fork is the easiest to access, but is only 50A/W sites. Lavonia has 30A/W/S sites, and Clear Lake (open Apr-Sep) has a few 50A/W/S sites and several 30A/W/S sites.
One reason we choose Lake Lavon is easy access to DART rail from Plano or Garland. After the graduation ceremony, taking DART rail back to Plano allowed us to beat the graduate and her friends to Plano by 35 minutes over their driving time.
Hickory Creek COE park on Lake Lewisville is another excellent choice and close to the Denton County connector to DART rail. Current construction on the I-35E bridge over Lake Lewisville is a problem. Also Hickory Creek is closed due to the current floods.
Plantation Place was badly damaged during the Dec 26 tornado, but is repaired and now open. Had some friends there last week.
