I was wondering about those recommendations, as the Charleston I knew had no nearby beaches where camping would have been tolerated. Charleston is in an large estuary, you have to get around that to get back to ocean shore where beaches would form. To the south, Folly Beach is quite upscale, mostly private property, with limited public access. To the north, Isle of Palms has a county park for public access to the beach, where you can pay to park a RV, but you can't really camp there.
There's about 70 miles of good beach from Southport to Murrells Inlet, 30 miles of it great beach around Myrtle Beach, but Charleston is 100 miles away from the center of that. Next major beach area to the south is Hilton Head, about 100 miles from Charleston to that one.
Charleston is not a bad day trip from Myrtle Beach, but when living on the beach, any day free, it had to be a choice, go to Charleston or go to the beach.
