Check out Tom Johnsons in Marion as your base camp, and then take your car and do a trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The poster that said you could get to the beach and the mountains in the same day is nuts, unless you are using a jet plain, or unless they plan on making a U turn after they get a cup of coffee at the beach !
