It is about a six-hour drive from Mt. Mitchell, the tallest mountain east of the Rockies, to Wilmington, a port city.

Consider Huntington Beach State Park in Murrells Inlet, SC, which is just south of Myrtle Beach. It is about a four-hour drive from Charlotte. You may not be able to get full hook-up site this close to your arrival, but i'm sure you can get a water and electric (30 amp) site. (They have a very good dump site, with multiple dump stations.)
