We winter in the FL Panhandle, but are natives of the area so may be biased. For many years the alternatives to the public campgrounds (lots of state parks and state forest, and national forests) was the famous Ho Hum RV Park at Carrabelle. In the last year three spacious and beautiful (from the highway) parks have opened and seem to be popular. They are located on US 98 between Apalachicola and Carrabelle on the coast. Believe it or not this area has similarities to Maine. Until recently most of the property along this coast was owed by major pulp wood companies, a sharp deterrent to development. It is now mostly owned by the state and federal government, still holding off development. Try it. You may like it. lizzie
