Lewis & Clark St Park MT

Would appreciate any info on this campground. Want to stay a couple nights in Jul but can't seem to reserve a site with electric (apparently only a few). DW likes A/C but I'm not sure that it will be that hot in this location.
  • Hi Bob. I'm just up the road a piece from you. I'm not real sure, but the wife and I stayed at a Louis & Clark SP up that way. It seems they name a lot of places after the explorers. Anyway I just wanted to let you know about our stay. The park looked nice but when I went to set up, I noticed a lot of droppings on the ground and said to the wife, but careful where you step as apparently people don't pick up after their animals. It was shortly after that when I discovered what I thought was from dogs turned out to be from big Canadian geese. they have a real problem and thought I would mention it. Maybe someone can confirm whether I have the right park. Enjoy your trip. BTW it can get toasty up there in July. It was in the ninetys when we were there mid July.
  • I'm guessing that you actually mean Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park

The average high is in the upper 70's, the record highs would be in the upper 90 or low triple digits and record lows are below freezing. Humidity is typically very low. Nights are also ways cool (I've seen it snow there in July, rare, but it happens).

There are other parks in the area.

I am wondering if you are thinking of Missouri Headwaters State Park which is close to Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park. I have stayed at Headwaters and had the same experience but over at Lewis and Clark Caverns have not had that problem. Both can be hot depending on when you visit.
  • Its been a few years since I visited the caverns and checked out the campground after touring the cave. We did not stay at the CG. It did not look like there would ever be a need for reservations as the CG only had a handful of rv's in the cg.

I think it would be a great spot for 2 to 3 days. Nice and quiet spot to relax and soak up a little bit Big Sky country. Whether you stay at the cg or not, the cave tour is really worth it.
  • We volunteered at Missouri Headwaters St Park for 3 summers. It can be 105 every day or 79, you never know. Each summer was different. There's a cg in Three Forks called Camp Three Forks(off Hwy 287) that used to be a KOA. I would recommend that you stay there, it has trees and a pool, laundry, etc. Lewis & Clark is several miles out of town (think about 15) and there is nothing else out there. If you stay in Three Forks there are many other places you can drive to and there's a store, post office, etc.
  • We found Headwaters SP to be a very neat special place with lots to see and the small town of Three Forks very friendly and had every thing needed. Went back there again and enjoyed it even more. As said, not a lot of CG choices right in the local Headwaters area but how many does one need anyway. Even got our oil changed in our diesel truck at Three Forks.

There's a very nice large CG we also stayed at on the east side of US-287 going south from Three Forks between Ennis Lake and the town of Ennis. At Ennis you can take State Road 287 (good road) off US-287 going west to Virginia City and Nevada City and the restored/preserved ghosttown. Very interesting! There's also a CG (KOA) west of Nevada City on SR 287 at the little town of Alder.

We took 6-1/2 weeks one summer and followed each of the 3 rivers (Madison, Jefferson, and Gallatin) from their sources to where they join to become the Missouri at Three Forks and then followed the Missouri all the way to where it joins the Mississippi a little north of St. Louis on the closest road we could find for each river. What a fun trip!
