Lyndhurst, NJ- Paranoid locals call Homeland Security on RV!

I work from home/rv and was traveling up rte 95.

I decided to stop at a diner, then in a large park in Lyndhurst, NJ to spend the day working and then go for some walks in the park.

It was a nice day out, so it seemed like a great spot to spend a few daylight hours away from traffic/noise.

I'm online in the RV, no slides out, no noise coming from the rv, when suddenly, a loud police style knock.

I come outside to see whats going on and 8-10 non uniformed, badge wearing homeland security officers are there to greet me!

Homeland Security!!!

I had been in the town all of 2 hours, including trying out their diner for breakfast.

They had me get out of the rig and questioned the hell out of me, took my ID, my bill of sale/title and just relentlessly questioned me for around an hour, while surrounding me in a circle.

They looked in my vehicle and truck camper, but did not do a full search. Note: you can carry a shotgun/rifle locked in your rv while driving in nj if it is locked away from the driver's compartment, as in a truck camper. I very frighteningly tested this bleeding edge of nj gun law out yesterday.

I'm a very normal looking white guy with short hair, new clothes, clean shaven. I don't even have a tattoo. It's a 2009 Arctic Fox truck camper on a 2002 Dodge diesel that was never used (just turned 70,000 miles).

They said it was abnormal for an rv to be in a public park in the middle of the day and that made it suspicious!!

I could not believe what was happening.

After the interrogation, they were nice, but who the F calls homeland security on an rv in a public park at 10:00 AM?!?!

This is a paranoid dump of a little town where the locals call RVs in for being in public parks. I can't imagine what would have happened if i had long hair, a weird look, was black or middle eastern. I probably wouldn't be here to write this. Would probably still be in interrogation.

The locals here are god awful people and very, very unfriendly to RVs.

Definitely DO NOT go to or buy anything in Lyndhurst, NJ.

  • Down The Avnue, that's exactly what happened. The hell is wrong with you? You think I have spare time to sit here making sh*t up? I'm warning other RVers to give the town a miss so they don't end up like I did.

HOMELAND SECURITY, not the police, came to me in a municipal park because some local moron called in that it was suspicious for an RV to be in a park at 10am.

In most parts of the country, it's normal to spend a day at a state, municipal or federal park with your rv, read in it, go for a
walk, etc. It's even normal throughout NJ.

What's not normal is someone calling homeland security on an rv in a park.

jfkmk, yes... homeland security apologized and said they hope I didn't take any offense after the raid on my rv.

    They were nice people.

My gripe is with the mentally challenged local residents who called them in on someone who decided to visit their local, municipal park. There were never any local cops involved. Only the feds.

While I don't doubt that law enforcement may have checked on the Rver parked at a local park, this story sounds grossly exaggerated.

They could not look in your camper unless you gave permission. You did not have to give them your "bill of sale/title" (who carries that with them anyway?).

You did not have to give them your ID (Terry Vs. Ohio).

There is something called the U.S. Constitution.

We was camping at Smoky Mtn Natl Park ELKMONT CAMP one season and on the last camp road was two very small tents setup and four vehicles there with each one showing different State tags. All were out of the country men speaking non-english...

They were all laughing and talking with each around an open fire...

They were all gone the next morning...

Now this was very suspicious to me but I didn't report it to anyone...

Who am I to say what is what...

With all my mounted Ham Radio Antennas on my OFF-ROAD POPUP trailer I probably have raised a few eyebrows as well...

I too find it odd the Homeland bunch came out. They must have been on high alert for something already.

"If you see something, say something". We are told this constantly. It certainly sounds like someone went overboard in your case. But... maybe something has happened in the past at that park? Maybe a known area to the locals for bad characters.

Odd that it would be Homeland Security... Why wouldn't the local cops just check you out?

I love New Jersey (some family live there, and we vacation there almost every year), but it has got to have the most laws, rules and regulations of any state in the USA.
  • Ive never been to Lyndhurst so I can't comment on the locals. I think you're jumping to the conclusion that they're all god awful RV haters is a bit extreme though.

You have no idea who called in homeland security, it could have been the local law enforcement. You have to consider how it looked. Some guy pulls into a park with a tc, then hops in back for hours. Could be someone plotting something could be nothing. But, you're awful close to nyc which is a constant terrorist target.

Once homeland security is called, they're going to assume the worst. No different than if local law enforcement is called.

Bottom line, did they chase you off or accept your explanation and allow you to stay?
