Thanks for all of your replies. I grew up in Michigan and remember my dad driving us across the Bridge the first year it opened. Then my sister and I helped to celebrate it's 50th anniversary and fireworks. The Bridge has a great history with my family. I know that it will be very crowded, but it is on my bucket list and now that I am retired, I need to do this. Thanks for everyone's advice.

Myself, I'm not a big fan of Mill Creek. Yes it is the closest to town but there is a lot of campgrounds nicer 20-30 miles away. There is even a couple small private ones just down the street from Mill Creek you could look at. Consider looking south towards Indian River area. Some very nice campgrounds there.

Whatever Campground you decide on make reservations very early. Motels and campgrounds fill up for this event.

We stayed at Foley Creek CG (National Forest) in mid September of 2012. We almost had it all to ourselves. It is just north of St. Ignace, nicely wooded with pretty and private sites and is inexpensive. No hook ups though if you need those.

We have walked the bridge three times in the past. My suggestion is to not drink coffee before you walk it and to use the restrooms, just before you start out. As the distance becomes very long and there are no facilities until you reach the other side. Speaking from experience.

There are a lot of CG's in the Straits area. A couple dozen or more south of the bridge and about a dozen more north of the bridge! However, Mill Creek is about the best on the south side of the bridge as it's close to so many things and it's on the lake with a long sand beach and sand bottom. Wilderness State Park CG is very nice also but it's about 10.5 miles west of Mackinaw City. Straits State Park north of the bridge in St Ignace is very nice also but the beach and bottom is very rocky. It has very nice views 24/7.
