Just down the hill from Red's there is a mostly dirt road next to the railroad tracks and the river. I was one of several trailers parked there last Fall. It looks loke a dead end road but you CAN turn around at the end. :B

Last year there was a vacant building north of the bridge with parking on rte 1, the walk across the bridge to Reds, seems to me the food is better than decent

We like Acadia, Camden Hills and Eastport. When in Eastport, bring your passport and hop the ferry to Campobello Island. The Belfast area is also fun to explore.

One of our favorite Maine campgrounds is Lobster Buoy Campsites in South Thomaston. It's really an old-fashioned, small campground with some delightful waterfront sites. And it's only a short walk to Waterman's Lobster Pound for the absolutely bestest lobster roll you will ever find.

kfp - a quick reply that would apply to all of coastal Maine. If you are thinking of July 4th anywhere on the coast you'd better make reservations NOW, parks fill up fast on Holidays. We reserve our sites a year ahead. As for beaches, the farther north you get the colder the water will be! Sand Beach at Acadia would be mighty cold in July. it's a beautiful spot and lots of folks enjoy the beach, but there won't be many in the water! We always swam at the nice fresh water beach at Echo Lake.

Not trying to Hi-Jack the thread but I wonder if anyone can expand n your thoughts specifically on Acadia. We are thinking of taking a trip from PA to Acadia over the July 4th week and will just stay in that area for the week. I have family in booth bay but I have never been any further north and I hear the park is beautiful. We have youg children and are looking for a nice campground with activities and close to sites, beaches if they have any, but like mentioned above, we like a "woodsy" or spread out feel to a campground. Not a trailer park or right on the highway type place. I would love to hear opinions on a trip to Acadia. Thanks!
