Martha Lake- Closed

I need my fellow boondockers thoughts on this matter - and if anyone familiar with WA Game and Wildlife is listening, even better.

On Sept 12 I arrived at my favorite dry camp area on Martha Lake at George WA. Much to my surprise I found it gated and locked. "No Unauthorized vehicles allowed" was the sign.

I drove on to Vantage and stayed the night. Next morning I called the Dept, and the lady on the phone said they always close that park on July 31, at the end of fishing season. That didn't sound right, so I did some emailing, and was told the area is normally closed on Oct 31, but they had a problem with squatters. I asked some follow-up questions, but the nice lady suddenly went silent. Of course she did, because now I'm asking her about their business.

When I first saw the closed gate I had a feeling it was because of me. I camped there in June, and noticed a funky old trailer with some junk around it. The couple "living" there happened to be near my favorite spot, but I set up anyway. Soon the young woman came over to my rig asking for help with her phone. Then she came over a couple hours later asking for more help. It kinda creeped me out - so I left. A day later I reported it to the State.

Apparently (and I don't know ALL the facts yet as the email lady is not talking) because of this squatting, the State decided just to shut the place down, denying access to everybody. What's that saying "cut off your nose despite your face?" I get rewarded for reporting abuse by having them shut the place down!!

It's not free. .you have to have a permit which is not expensive, but costs 3x more than it did 2 years ago. I pay heavy taxes to this state and donate freely to WA state parks. I'd really like some answers as I hate thinking the only solution they came up with was to evict the squatters and shut the place down.

I'm pretty thick-skinned for the "who cares? - go somewhere else" type answers so do that if you must.
  • Sadly by now you have to know that squatters and homeless have more rights then us tax payers do. Can't touch them, can't remove them because they have 'rights'. So hands tied, all most venues can do is shut the venue down.

Traveling thru Alabama the local state gov there had had a enough of the homeless and druggies in state and national parks and just went in one day and 'drove them all out'.

Only thing is they all headed for the local CG that I just happened to be at. I asked the CG owner just WTF she was doing letting them all in.......Sign outside CG said tent campers welcome. Her attorney said she HAD to let them in until they could get someone out to remove the sign. :R

4 crack/meth smoking prostitutes and 3 guys toting guns and knives set up a tent next to my MH. Within an hour they were fighting and threatening to kill each other over a who's crack pipe it was.

I pulled out even though I had paid for 4 days.

IMHO the pendulum has swung way to far to one side regarding the 'rights' of homeless, druggies and just plain squatters. God help us.

And that is what irritates me the most. One bad apple and everyone pays the price. Probably easier to close down than enforce from their point of view.
    My thoughts exactly.

I'll give them some latitude if there were many instances of squatting, they evicted them but they came back...etc. I'd really like to know that. But if they just evicted one couple and then shut it down, wow.. that's really lazy.

Yep I like to give them the benefit of the doubt also.
(Side note) Your post on Pateros, where that guy parked almost real close to you. We used that place for years, we always put extra $$ in box, when it was "suggested" to give something. Now posted "what to pay", very sad in way. We park on the water side.

  • could be just for this season, to give the squatters time to "move along".

I've run into squatters twice, and I know what you mean by creeping you out. They are opportunists to be sure, and I always get the feeling I am the obstacle they are trying to get around.

  • Bit by the law of unintended consequences. Seriously doubt your one complaint was reason they shut it down, though you could have been the straw that broke the camel's back. I think you are going to see it more and more. People abuse the system, and the system fights back. You see it with towns and parking laws, parks with age limits on rigs and occupancy rules, zoning and HOA rules and a host of other places.
