As a general statement, a TC on a 4x4 will allow you to get further on the rougher roads. Although a Sportsmobile built on a MB Sprinter 4x4 van base would be an interesting possibility. One of the TC's with the top that pops up will further reduce the vehicle height and help avoid those pesky low hanging branches at many good boondocking sites.
Another option would be one of the off-road PUPs such as a Viking V3 or a Flagstaff 23SCSE. These have larger tires and the axle already flipped. You then have the advantage of being able to set up the trailer and use your tow vehicle to travel away from camp. Easier to hear the birds chirping in the morning also.
