As a Michigan resident we have camped extensively in our state parks. In fact, I just reserved 3 nights at the end of August this morning and have 3 other reservations yet to use this summer and early fall. The reservation system is very workable and about as customer friendly as any other state system I have used. Out of state residents are expected to pay bit higher fees in any state park since state residents pay taxes within their state already, including vehicle, watercraft, snowmobile fees, as well as fishing and hunting fees.
In Michigan, to be able to camp within walking distance of a Great Lake, inland land, or river/stream is something really great. We've camped in many states as well as in Canada and I am extremely happy with what Michigan state parks have to offer.
One thing I do appreciate about Florida state parks is that they have water hook ups while Michigan doesn't. Of course we have freezing winter temps that Florida doesn't have to deal with relative to water hook up lines. In New York many state parks don't even have electricity. Still, most state parks wherever you are have fees much less expensive than private campgrounds.
