I would have just cancelled the site for my date and ate the fee....
AND then just showed up a day early and paid cash at the gate for the early day (since the site was reserved for the weekend, no one likely to be sitting on it the earlier day you wanted)...
And just bailed if I wanted to leave early - not cancelling.
The above likely cheaper than what you tried to do. And a lot less frustration.
